Paramus stood near the field in front of the camp, he watched the new recruits go through some training exercises. Once it was known that the Rogues were going to accept some new members, some of the younger folk in the village of Ocllo readily volunteered in hopes of some excitement other than what they knew on this little island. Nitespell was putting them through the paces at a harsh rate and he was happy to see that the two guards they had met when they first arrived were both amongst the new warriors.
He heard the portal activate and the shout from one of the new recruits who was stationed to guard it. Since their unusual arrival several more of their brotherhood had come through the gate, but Ras thought it better to station a guard around it just in case something hostile came through. It had been a couple of weeks since the last time the portal had activated, and Paramus was just beginning to wonder if the portals were no longer functional. Ras and Alexan both rode up next to him with his horse in tow, he mounted quickly and all three started towards the portal. Guess that answers that question he thought while trying to see who or what had arrived.
Gema dropped into a fighting stance when the man appeared, he was a good six feet tall, wearing leather pants and boots. His muscled chest was covered only in the many scars that a warrior would acquire from a lifetime of conflict. Unlike the others, this man did not fall face first into the dirt, but instead landed on one knee and had shoved his large war hammer into the dirt in front of himself to keep him upright. He knelt with his head bowed and his white twin braided hair fell to the sides of his face. Gema turned and yelled back at the camp in warning, then turned her attention back to the man. Within a few seconds three more people followed him through the portal, and instantly fell to the side unconscious. She wasn’t sure what to do at this point but prudently decided the best thing to do was wait until help arrived.
Thasteon Mox had entered the portal in Minoc with his woman, niece, and nephew. He wasn’t sure what had happened, but the blackness seemed to last forever and then suddenly he was stumbling forward, the light partially blinding him. He shoved the head of his war hammer into the dirt in front of him as he landed on one knee. He was instantly alert and had heard someone shout. He could hear the two in front of him as they breathed hard, and Thasteon also knew that he was in a very vulnerable spot. He heard the portal activate and three bodies land in the dirt. Not knowing what was going on or who he was about to face, he struggled to stand to better defend himself if needed as he heard hoofbeats of riders that were approaching.
Once he was on his feet, he looked up at the two nervous youngsters in front of him and instantly realized there was no threat. He glanced over his left shoulder first and then his right to see the twins both on the ground along with Raven, but they appeared to be breathing, so they were not in immediate harms way. When he looked back, he recognized the riders and relaxed a bit and shifted his war hammer to his left hand. Paramus grinned at him as he rode past him and quickly dismounted to check on his daughter and Raven, while Alexan did the same for Paramus’s son Salt on the other side of the portal. Ras stopped near the two young guards and dismounted. He clapped Gema on the shoulder and walked past her, leaving her staring back and forth at what was going on in front of her. “Holy sons of the whore Minax, it is good to see you Thasteon.” He said as they clasped their right arms and gave each other a half hug with the left. Ras turned to the two guards as they stood there, “Don’t just stand there, go help Alexan and Paramus!”
Thasteon gave a long look around and turned back to where Paramus, Alexan, and now the two strangers that were tending his family, “What is going on Ras?” he asked, then pointed at the three still on the ground, “and will they be alright?” Then with another look around, “Just where in abyss are we?”
Ras nodded and Paramus got up from where Devi and Raven were as they started to move around and were trying to sit up. He stepped over to Thasteon to greet him as Ras had done. “Thasteon, I agree with Ras, it is good to see you brother.” He looked over to see that Salt was also getting to his feet with Alexan’s help. “We thought everyone was gone.”
Paramus with Ras and Alexan’s help, gave Thasteon the rundown on what had happened to them and what they had been doing these past several weeks and once everyone was back on their feet and able to move after shaking off the effects of the portal, they all headed towards the camp at a walk. Gema and Mardon followed, leading the mounts.
Thasteon took in everything at once, he seen Grumpy who gave him a nod and went back to pounding on the metal in what Paramus had said was his new smithy. Thasteon shook his head and smiled, that was just like Grumpy. Nitespell yelled from the training field with a wave. He was taken back for a second to see a dozen or so trainees and the camp set up in a perfect location. “You boys been busy in this new land!” he exclaimed. He looked around for more familiar faces, upon seeing none he asked, “Who else made it through?”
“Frawg and Xaviour came through separately a couple of weeks ago.” Alexan answered, then continued, “They were the last to come through before today.”
Thasteon grimaced and looked back at the training field, “I bet Abigail Nitespell wasn’t happy about that.”
“No, she wasn’t. We sent Xaviour to the mainland via ship and had Frawg tag along with him to do some scouting.” Paramus remarked. “We need to get a lay of the land to see what we have stumbled into.”
Thasteon nodded and looked back to Ras, “Before you ask, last I saw of Celest she was still in Mystin and didn’t have any plans to travel or have any reason to be near a portal my friend.”
Ras just nodded, “We got work to do here in this new land. No time to dwell on what can’t be changed.”
“Yes, we do, but let’s not give up hope, we may yet find our way back or her to us.” Thasteon looked over at Raven, then gave Ras a smile, “besides, she’s a Rogue Bludguard. She will be fine.”
