The Codex System Guide
The Codex is a character-bound progression item that earns XP from PvM, unlocks tiers across multiple playstyle categories, and allows you to spend Codex Points to activate powerful perks.
What is a Codex?
A Codex is a special, newbied item named a magical codex. It is designed as a long-term PvM progression system that rewards you for playing normally while letting you specialize your character.
Key concepts:
- XP is earned from creature kills.
- Tiers unlock as your Codex XP increases.
- Codex Points are awarded when you reach new tiers.
- Points are spent to unlock tiers and perks in different categories.
Binding (Ownership)
Your Codex becomes permanently bound to you the first time you use it.
- Double-clicking the Codex for the first time binds it to your character.
- Once bound, it cannot be used by anyone else.
Where the Codex must be
To function properly, the Codex must be in the base of your backpack.
- It must NOT be equipped.
- It must NOT be inside another bag or container.
If your active Codex is moved out of your backpack, it will stop functioning.
Activation and Attunement
The Codex must be activated and attuned before it works.
- Single-click the Codex and use the context menu to set it Active.
- Once activated, it must attune for 10 minutes.
- While attuning, the Codex will display a countdown.
- When complete, the Codex status becomes Active.
Important rules:
- Only one Codex can be active at a time.
- Activating a new Codex will deactivate any other active Codex in your pack.
PvP & Attunement Rules
The Codex is PvM-focused.
- You cannot start attunement while PvP-flagged.
- If you engage in PvP while your Codex is active, attunement is lost.
- Lost attunement requires another 10-minute attune to reactivate perks and XP gain.
Earning Codex XP
Codex XP is earned by actively playing the game. XP comes from combat, gathering professions, and achievements.
Creature Kills (PvM)
Defeating creatures grants Codex XP.
XP is based on the creature’s maximum health:
XP = Creature Max Hits ÷ 10 Minimum XP per kill is always 1.
XP may be shared between eligible players if they:
- Have an Active, fully attuned Codex
- Have the Codex in the base of their backpack
Eligible players can include:
- The player who made the kill
- The owner of a controlled or summoned creature
- Nearby party members
- Players with looting rights
If multiple players qualify, XP is split evenly (minimum 1 XP each).
Harvesting Professions
Your Codex also gains XP from gathering activities.
Harvesting XP is awarded from:
- Mining
- Lumberjacking
- Fishing
XP is granted as you successfully harvest resources. You must have an Active, fully attuned Codex in your backpack to receive XP.
Achievements
Completing achievements can also award Codex XP.
When an achievement grants XP:
- The XP is applied directly to your active Codex
- You must have the Codex active and attuned
XP Cap
Once Tier 5 is reached, the Codex no longer gains XP.
Tiers and XP Requirements
| Tier | Required Codex XP |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 20,000 |
| Tier 2 | 35,000 |
| Tier 3 | 50,000 |
| Tier 4 | 65,000 |
| Tier 5 | 85,000 |
Codex Points
- You earn 1 Codex Point per tier reached.
- Maximum total Codex Points is 5.
- Points may be spent or refunded through the Codex interface.
The Codex tracks:
- Total Points Earned
- Available (Unspent) Points
Categories
Perks are organized into categories. Each category has its own Tier 1–5 progression.
Current active categories:
- General
- Mage
- Warrior (Dexxer)
- Tamer
- Adventurer
- Crafter
Spending Codex Points
Using Codex Points is a two-step process:
- Unlock a tier within a category
- Select a perk within that tier
Rules:
- Codex must be Active and fully attuned
- Codex must be in the base of your backpack
- You cannot unlock tiers beyond your Codex XP tier
- Some perks require minimum skill levels
Resetting & Respeccing
You may undo choices at any time:
- Unselecting a tier refunds its point
- Unselecting a perk refunds its point
- A full reset option returns all spent points
All reset actions require the Codex to be active and attuned.
Codex Messages
The Codex can display messages such as XP gains. You may toggle these messages on or off.
